Axel would agree that there's something very appealing about flames on fingers, really, but then, he definitely is just interested in fire in general. Even before he had learned how to wield magic, he'd always been the kid who wanted to light the barbecue or set off the fireworks, so it had been very fitting, when he'd discovered what his patron element within the Organization had turned out to be.
When Mai speaks, Axel gives her a curious look.
"A while, huh?" he asks, grinning and then gesturing down one of the hallways to ask if they should get to meandering in any particular direction. "So there are mages where you come from, too?" He's always interested in how magic works on other worlds.
"Not exactly. Seems like a lot of people around here have magic abilities or something like that though."
She's keen on giving this whole follow a wall thing a try and so soon Mai's fingertips lay against the wall next to her while she holds her own flame in her other hand.
"Where I'm from, it's nothing like that. It's not magic, I mean. It's just part of nature, you could say. I guess, I don't know, I really don't know anything about the whole philosophical side of it."
Well, beyond the idea that dragons were the first firebenders. That's about where her knowledge stops.
"Nature, huh?" That's an interesting take on it. "You mean like some people are just born with it and others can never do it?" he asks.
So far as he knows, anyone could do magic, if they were properly trained, but maybe that isn't the case on all worlds. He never even knew magic was real until he joined the Organization and learned how to wield it.
"Good, you've got that part at least. I've had to explain the whole "some people can, some people can't" to others and it's kind of a pain." Mostly because she doesn't really know a huge amount about bending beyond basics about firebenders.
"It's exactly like that though. It's not something you can learn and it's not even something you inherit. Some bloodlines are stronger but that doesn't guarantee a child from that bloodline will be a bender at all."
i am a miserable failure. things have calmed down now tho so i promise i'll be less fail
"Nah, I always figured magic--or however it works in your world--was like any other talent, in the end: some people can do it, some people can't, some people are awesome at it, others not so much." He waggles a hand in the air. "I can't draw a straight line, and I suck at math," he says with a snicker, "but I'm good at Fire. Go figure.
'Bender'?" he echoes then, and makes a huh sort of sound. "That's kind of a cool word for it. So obviously you know some people who can... bend... fire, then, yah? What other stuff can be... bended? Bent?" He's not sure what he proper conjugation is in this context, bear with him.
"Altogether? Fire, water, earth and air. I don't really know much about bending and I definitely don't know a lot about anything but fire benders."
She lets the hand bearing her own flame drift a bit to take in where they are now. "I was raised in the Fire Nation after all. Most of our military is fire benders."
"Pretty standard," he says. "Those're kind of the basics where I come from, too, though..." He taps his chin. "Earth magic is actually more uncommon," he says. "Fire, Blizzard, Thunder, and Aero are the standard elementals, and then there's the restorative magicks: Cure, Esuna, and so on." He laughs and shakes his head. "I'm not so good at those, I'll admit."
He grins widely then.
"The Fire Nation, huh? Sounds like my kind'a place," he chuckles. "That's cool that it's like a military tactic," he says. "Magic is kind of a down-low skill most places, where I'm from. Like it's used in battle, sure, but most people in most places aren't even aware that it exists, let alone that they might be capable of doing it. A lot of people don't even believe in it."
