He's being helpful and she's interested, but she does shoot him a sideways glance at the 'got it memorized' remark. "Thank you, I think I can keep that in mind," she says dryly. But he's got a point-- there does seem the need for a harder strike.
So she does that next time, trying to hold the rock still and bash the knife against the edge. It takes a few tries, and she almost does, in fact, pinch her finger (a narrow miss), but eventually she does it. A spark flies from the flint.
A solitary spark, but it's a start. "I see," she says. "And that's all it takes for the tinder to catch?"
He says that a lot, Diana. You'll get used to it eventually. Or punch him eventually. Or both. Either way.
Axel grins widely as she manages to get a spark from the flint, and then gives a nod at her question.
"For the most part," he says. "I mean, it's not always gonna catch on the first try, or the second try... Sometimes it takes a while for the tinder to catch. Depends on the type of tinder, how dry it is, et cetera et cetera." He waves a hand back and forth. "But in general, yeah, that plus a little perseverance is all it takes."
He then offers that hand toward her.
"I'm Axel, by the way," he says. "You been around this place long?"
She doesn't punch; she blows people up with magic. But she nods again at his words. "I'll remember that," she says quietly. "Thank you for the advice." Her voice is calm and reserved, but there's sincerity in her tone, polite and standoffish as it might be.
Diana glances at his and and then sets the tinder and flint down, dusting her skirt off and taking it, adding a polite half-curtsy as she does. "Diana Cavendish. I've been here nearly half a year."
